Shawn Chaffin will be roaming the sidelines for the Indiana University East women’s basketball team the upcoming season on Lingle Court as he was selected as the new head coach for the Red Wolves.
“The year can’t get here soon enough,” the 51-year-old said. “I see a lot of potential. I’m really excited to be with a group of people that all want to point in the same direction.”
Chaffin comes to IU East after serving three years as the head women’s basketball coach and associate athletic director at Waldorf University in Iowa.
“We had a good pool of candidates and Shawn’s years of experience along with his work ethic had us choose him as the next head women’s coach,” IU East Athletic Director Joe Griffin said.
A graduate of the University of Montana-Western, Chaffin served as an assistant coach at his alma mater before moving on to various coaching and administrative positions over the last 25 years at the University of Great Falls, Montana State-Northern, Minot State University and San Diego Christian College.
“He has been at a lot of different levels but with many years in the NAIA along with some leadership positions in the NAIA and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association really was the icing on the cake,” Griffin said. “He is a great fit for the department. I see him doing well here with this team as he gets them playing hard, together and having fun while doing it.”
The Montana native is ready for the challenge.
“I’m really excited to get started with these young ladies,” Chaffin said. “The players that I’ve met are definitely very hungry for success. This program has had some terrific success in the past and they really want to be the group that leads them back to that.”
Chaffin is already putting in the work for the season.
“It’s really hitting the ground running,” he said. “There are important club basketball tournaments and kids that I’m recruiting. We also have players coming in for workouts who are using the summer period to get better. I’m just super excited to be here and I can’t wait for everything to get rolling.”
