Prairie View’s Pugh will not return as Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) announced today that coach Sandy Pugh will not be returning to coach the Prairie View A&M women’s basketball team. Pugh has led the Panthers since May of 2018.

“As I step into the next chapter of my life” said Pugh.  “I am filled with gratitude for the incredible journey at Prairie View A&M University. Coaching for over 30 years — the last seven as Head Coach of the PVAMU Women’s Basketball team — has been an honor. Through victories and challenges, the resilience and dedication of this community have shaped me in ways I will forever cherish. To my staff, fellow coaches, and the athletes I’ve had the privilege to lead, thank you for the camaraderie and unwavering support. The memories we’ve built together will remain with me always.”

Prairie View A&M Athletic Director Anton Goff expressed gratitude for Coach Pugh’s leadership and dedication to the program, stating, “Coach Pugh’s commitment to helping our student-athletes succeed both personally and academically is admirable.”

Goff emphasized that the University’s focus moving forward is to find a head coach with the vision and leadership to elevate the women’s basketball program’s standing within the SWAC and on a national platform.

A national search for the next head women’s basketball search will begin immediately.
