Houston Christian parts ways with Women’s Basketball Coach Donna Finnie

HCU Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci announced on that head women’s basketball coach Donna Finnie‘s contract would not be renewed after 12 seasons at the helm of the Huskies’ program.

“It is a bittersweet day, as I have poured an enormous amount of effort and energy into the Houston Christian program since I arrived on campus in 2010,” said Finnie. “I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish and will cherish the long-lasting relationships that I have developed with my staff and student-athletes in that time. I am incredibly excited for a new chapter in my career and I wish HCU nothing but continued success moving forward.”

Finnie first arrived on the HCU campus in 2010, spending three seasons as an assistant coach before being elevated to the role of head coach for the 2013-14 season. Her impact was immediate as that first year saw the Huskies lead the Southland Conference in field goal percentage and rank 39th in the nation.

HCU won its’ first-ever SLC regular season championship on the hardwood under Finnie’s leadership in 2021-22, going 12-2 in league play and earning a spot in the WNIT. She closes her HCU career with 124 wins as head coach, the second-highest total in program history. Finnie coached one SLC Player of the Year, eight all-conference selections and 17 academic all-conference honorees. Her teams have been recognized as being part of the WBCA Academic Top 25 every season of her tenure.

“Donna has been a terrific leader for our women’s basketball program since she first came to HCU,” said Moniaci. “We are grateful for all of the hard work and energy she has given to the women’s basketball program. She has certainly left her mark on our program as the longest-tenured coach in our history and we wish her all the best in her career moving forward.”

HCU will begin a national search for its next head coach immediately.
