D’Youville University and Vice President for Athletics and Planning, Ona Halladay, has announced the hiring of Kelly Broderick as the institution’s new women’s basketball head coach.
“What stood out the most about Kelly during the interview process was her professionalism, ability to the lead the program and young women came through very clearly,” Halladay said. “With the head coaching experience that she has, she will be very successful in recruiting, she understands the city. The biggest thing that stood out was that she’s committed, a hard worker, and will hold this program to a high standard that will result in winning. She has all the qualities and characteristics that fit D’Youville University and am excited to see where she takes us!”
Broderick comes back to the Queen City after a two-year stint at Muskingum University located in New Concord, Ohio. The Fighting Muskies are coming off their most successful season since the 2010-11 campaign, winning 11 games to post back-to-back double-digit winning season. Under her guidance, Muskingum had two players earn All-OAC honors, eight student-athletes honored with Academic All-OAC accolades, and six named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. During her first season in New Concord, the Fighting Muskies were crowned the statistical National Champions in free throw percentage after shooting a school record .789 from the free throw line.
“I love that D’Youville is in Buffalo as I am very familiar with the area,” Broderick said. “I lived here for four years and loved every second of it. Being in Buffalo allows me to be closer to my family, whom I am very close with. Another big draw for me was the facilities and the staff confirmed that it was the place to be. Ona was extremely welcoming, and it was clear to see what her vision is for the department.”
Prior to Muskingum, Broderick was the head coach of the Medaille College women’s basketball team for four seasons. Broderick had 17 student-athletes earn academic all-conference honors, while several players earned all-conference accolades. Along with her coaching duties, Broderick served as a travel and contest coordinator, and advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and founded the school’s Leadership Academy.
Broderick got her first head coaching opportunity at Finger Lakes Community College, leading the Lakers for two seasons. Broderick was named Mid-State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year during both seasons. Broderick led the team to a regular season and tournament championship during the 2017-18 campaign, advancing to the regional semifinals that same season.
“One thing people will learn about me is that I am extremely passionate and competitive,” said Broderick. I care deeply about my student-athletes and those that I work with, and work hard to ensure that they know and feel that. My loves for the game and my competitiveness shines through on the court. It creates an environment where our players can showcase their love for the game and competitiveness as well.
Broderick as a solid player in her own right, first playing two seasons at FLCC. Broderick helped her team to the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship games her first year and were NJCAA Region 3 Quarterfinalist both years. Broderick ranks eighth in FLCC history in three-pointers made in a season. After Finger Lakes, Broderick continued her academics and athletics at Nazareth College. Broderick helped the team to 33 wins and advance to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament Final Four each year.
Broderick graduated from Finger Lakes Community College in 2014 with an Associate’s Degree in liberal arts and humanities. She later earned her B.S. in psychology and B.A. in mathematics from Nazareth in 2016.
“I want to thank Ona for giving me this opportunity and trusting me to take over the women’s basketball program,” Broderick added. “I am excited to get started, and look forward to the successes that our current and future players, along with the program, will have.”
