Harford Athletic Director Ed Liesch has appointed Marvin Evans as the head coach of the women’s basketball program. He begins his responsibilities immediately.
Coach Evans commented, “l’d first like to thank God for blessing me with this amazing opportunity to join the Harford Community College family. I’d also like to thank Mr. Ed Liesch and the entire search committee for presenting the college to me and showcasing all of the amazing programs, facilities, degrees and activities that Harford Community College has to offer its students! I’m super excited to return to Maryland and immediately get started serving the student-athletes and the entire HCC community! The immediate goal will be to establish a championship culture on and off the court, as well as build upon the Women’s basketball program’s past accomplishments and successes.”
Coach Evans moves on from his position at Clarks Summit University where he began working the summer of 2022 as the Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball team and the Director of the Recreational Center. In his first season leading the Women’s Basketball program, Coach Evans led the Lady Defenders to 18 wins and a trip back to the CSAC (now United East) Championship game for the 2nd time in program history. The Defenders led the CSAC in total points scored (2033) and points per game (72.6). These averages also ranked 38th out of 425 NCAA Division III NCAA programs. Coach Evans also coached and mentored the 2022 and 2023 CSAC Player of the Year Elizabeth Singleton, along with 3 other All-CSAC award winners. In the summer of 2023 Coach Marvin was selected to coach the first ever Women’s NCAA College Basketball Academy. The Academy provided the top HS Women’s Basketball recruits in the country with a sample of the overall college basketball experience. The NCAA Academy paired high-level basketball competition with life skills instruction.
Coach Evans is originally from Stratford, Connecticut, although he has held leadership roles all along the mid-Atlantic region including Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The first 12 years of his coaching career were spent in Maryland, and the first six years were spent coaching at the high school level.
Prior to Clarks Summit, Coach Evans spent time at Franklin and Marshall College where he held the position of Lead Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach in the 2021-22 season. While there he was responsible for weekly academic assistance and mentoring, scouting of Centennial Conference opponents, leading player development workouts, and assisting with recruiting and Social media efforts. In 2020-21 Coach Evans served as a volunteer assistant at NCAA Division I Delaware State University where he assisted with practice planning, player development, scouting, travel plans and recruiting. Prior to that, Coach Evans had a successful three-year run as the head women’s basketball coach at Howard Community College. There Evans led the program to a complete turnaround in just three seasons, resulting in the program winning 20 games and earning their 1st NJCAA Region 20 playoff victory in school history. During that historic 2019-20 season, he was named the Whoopdirt.com National Coach of the Week on February 18, 2020, and was later named a Finalist for Whoopdirt.com Junior College Coach of the Year. Coach Marvin Evans was responsible for recruiting and coaching three All-Region XX players while at Howard Community College.
Evans also has experience at the Division III level, gained during his time at Goucher and Stevenson. At Goucher, he worked with the post players and helped mentor Brianna Bull to Landmark Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors. Serving as the head coach of the Women’s club basketball team at Stevenson, he led the Mustangs to several victories over Division I club teams and had direct oversight over all areas of that team. Evans got his start in college coaching at Anne Arundel Community College where he helped develop the 2014-15 NJCAA’s leading scorer, Tiffany McKinney, to All-America honors while the team nearly doubled its win total from the previous season.
Evans graduated from Western Connecticut State University in 2004, he was a member of SAAC and also served as a two-year team co-captain. Evans was one of the top 25 players in the history of the Little East Conference ending his 4-year career with 1285 points and 717 rebounds. He was named the 2004 Little East Conference Player of the Year, ECAC Tournament MVP, and first-team NABC All-New England as a senior and still ranks among the program’s best players in points and rebounds in school history. Recognized as one of the Top 25 players in the history of the Little East Conference in 2011, he led his team to a pair of conference championships which resulted in trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Coach Evans received his Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and has since earned his Certificate of Personal Training from the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT). In addition to his coaching experience, he is the owner of CMC Training, a program dedicated to assisting student-athletes in all facets of basketball development. Coach Evans has also worked several high-profile camps, including the High School All-American Basketball Showcase where he has served as The Maryland showcase Director since 2017, the Howard University Elite Camp, and the Towson University Elite Camp.
