Lancaster Bible College and the Lancaster Bible College Athletic Department are pleased to announce Kel Brown as the new Lancaster Bible Women’s Basketball Head Coach. Brown becomes the 28th head coach in program history and replaces Ryan Carpenter who stepped down in April to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Brown is a graduate of Messiah University (’19 & ’21) receiving his post-graduate degree in Higher Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership. While attending Messiah, Brown had a unique experience climbing the ranks within the Women’s Basketball program. He began as a student assistant before being named the program’s first graduate assistant. Since then, Brown has been serving as an assistant coach leading individual player scouting and skill development. Brown also served as a Resident Director for an Upperclass Residence Hall on Messiah’s campus leading a staff in professional development and conflict management.
Not only has Brown accrued a wealth of experience in his time at Messiah, but he also comes from a long line of successful basketball coaches. Coming from PG County, Md., Brown is connected throughout the community as his stepfather, grandfather, and uncle have all coached basketball for many years at various levels. His grandfather was the long-time coach of PG County Community College for more than 40 years while his aunt has served on staff of several NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball programs including where she is at now, Francis Marian.
“The past month has truly been an answer to prayer,” said Brown. “I am not only excited for the opportunity of a new program to call my own and build from the ground up, but also to grow within Charger Athletics.”
Brown emphasized his desire to walk with his players and help them grow holistically.
“I can’t wait to really get to know players and grow with them. Basketball will bring us all together, but it’s the holistic growth, that is emotionally, spiritually, and physically that matters the most. Just being able to check-in with my players ensuring they are ready to go both basketball wise and in life is something I am deeply passionate about.”
Rod Baughman, Director of Athletics, echoed the excitement for Kel Brown and family as they join Charger Athletics this summer.
“Lancaster Bible College is a unique place to coach and Kel Brown checked all the boxes for what matters most to us,” said Baughman. “His style is highly relational, marked by spiritual mentoring and he is connected to a number of highly successful coaching trees. We can’t wait to see how God will use him to impact lives and compete for championships! Welcome to Charger nation Kel and Julia!”
Brown echoed the importance of family within his own life saying, “I’m excited to gain a new family and begin to build relationships. We look forward to all that God has in store and are humbled to be a part of Charger Nation!”
Brown take the helm July 1.
