Blake Huber will be the next head coach of Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball.
“Blake (Huber) has a tremendous coaching pedigree, which when coupled with his enthusiasm provides us a dynamic new leader of our Greyhound women’s basketball program,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Paul Weir on the hiring of the 10th coach in program history. “We have great faith that he will return our program to championship success and we look forward to watching his exciting career grow with us here in Portales.”
A known winner within Division II will be coming to ENMU with ten years of collegiate coaching experience.
“I want to thank Dr. Johnston and Dr. Weir for their effort in this process,” said Blake Huber when asked about the hiring. “I am blessed to be a part of the Greyhound family with so many strong traditions and excited to bring the program back to where I know it can be.”
Huber spent the last season as the head coach at Texas A&M-Texarkana where he took the Eagles to a 29-2 (.935) mark, including an undefeated conference record, 20-0 (1.000). In his first season, he was named the Red River Conference Coach of the Year. He led the team to their first ever tournament appearance and victory, advancing to the second round of the NAIA national tournament with a win over Grand View.
Prior to his time in Texarkana, he spent two years as the assistant coach at Arkansas Tech where he served as the recruiting coordinator. With the Golden Suns, he helped the team earn the top seed in the east division of the Great American Conference in 2021 and advance to the South Central regional tournament. In 2021-22, the program went 16-13 and made it to the conference tournament championship game with a pair of postseason wins.
From 2018-2020 he was the assistant coach at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. In his first season with the Vaqueros, they went 18-15 (.545) and earned a bid into the WBI (Women’s Basketball Invitational). The team lost in the Western Athletic Conference tournament championship game in double overtime, 76-73, to New Mexico State. A win would have marked the first appearance for UTRGV in the NCAA tournament.
During the 2017-18 season, he was with Henderson State as the assistant coach where he managed scouting reports, developed workout plans, and served as the recruiting coordinator. The Reddies went 21-9, improving the win total from the previous season by 13 victories and earning the fourth most wins over the 50+ years of the team. HSU’s 16 conference wins are the most in school history in a single season.
Huber got his start in coaching as an undergrad. He spent his first season in 2013-14 at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri where the team advanced to the Elite 8 with a 27-4 record. From 2014-2017, he was a student assistant at Pittsburg State. He helped with scouting, recruiting, and in-game adjustments with the Gorillas. Over three seasons, he saw the team go 81-19, including trips to the NCAA tournament all three years. The 2015-16 squad earned wins over Sioux Falls, Arkansas Tech, and Emporia State to earn the bid into the Elite 8.
As an assistant coach, he holds a 190-78 record with five NCAA regional appearances.
Huber graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis in public relations from Pittsburg State in 2017.
