Heather Macy takes over the helm of the Barry University women’s basketball coaching staff this fall after spending three season at Greensboro College, director of athletics Dr. Scott Smith announced today.
“I look forward to Coach Macy starting her tenure as the women’s head basketball coach at BarryU,” Smith said. “The more I got to know her through our search process, the more I knew she was a perfect fit for our program and the University. Her leadership experience and approach to the game of basketball are just what we need for the program.”
Macy directed the Pride to a 57-16 mark in her three seasons, including a conference tournament championship in 2023 and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. After the CoVID shortened 2020-21 season, Macy’s team went 51-5 and have only lost one conference game (35-1). During the 2022-23 season she mentored the USA South Conference Player of the Year and the USA South Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to having to two players selected to the D3Hoops.com NCAA Division III All-Region Six teams. Her 2022-23 team placed in the top 35 in 14 NCAA statistical categories, while six of her players were ranked in the individual NCAA statistical categories. In 2021-22, Macy mentored two players to the All USA South First team, and her team finished in the top 10 of scoring offenses nationally, at over 84 points per game, as well as 9th nationally in scoring margin (24.4 points) and 13th nationally in field goal percentage (34.2%). She earned her 300th career victory in Greensboro’s February 12, 2022 win over Meredith.

Prior to Greensboro, Macy spent time as the head coach at Spartanburg Methodist in the NJCAA, at NCAA D-I East Carolina, and D-II Francis Marion and Pfeiffer. She has compiled an overall record of 327-178 mark, including 306-170 as an NCAA coach. Macy has led her teams to seven conference championships, winning seven coach of the year honors, three conference tournament championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances.
In addition to her time as a head coach, Macy also spent time as an assistant coach on the Division I (High Point and UMBC) and Division II levels, which started at Catawba College immediately following her graduation from Greensboro College.
While obtaining her B.S. in Sport and Exercise Studies (Cum Laude) from Greensboro, Macy was a four-year member of the Pride women’s basketball team. During her playing career, Macy placed her name in the Greensboro College record books for three-point field goals attempted and made, while also ranking ninth in all-time games played with 105. She was also inducted into the Greensboro College Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 1996 women’s basketball team on March 31, 2012. In addition to the Greensboro College Hall of Fame, Macy was also inducted into the Starmount High School Hall of Fame.
In addition to her degree from Greensboro College, Macy also holds an M.S. in Human Performance and Recreation with a concentration in Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Macy has also been a speaker at some of the top coaching clinics and professional development events in the country, including USA Basketball and Nike Championship Clinics. Coach Macy is also a frequent speaker at corporate and leadership events on the topics of leadership, teamwork, accountability, and discipline. She is currently hosting a one-hour weekly Rising Coaches TV series discussing her book, Two Feet Forward: Everyday Lessons in Leadership. The leadership book was a #1 new release in basketball coaching on Amazon.
Macy is one of only 300 coaches in the country to have received a Certification in Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in 2016. She currently travels around the country educating teams, coaches and organizations on how to use EQ to become an elite performer. Several of these presentations are currently published on CoachTube.com for download. Combined with the EQ Certification, in the spring of 2020, Coach Macy also received a specialization in Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.
