With over 20 years of head coaching experience and sporting over 400 victories, Jim Turgeon has joined the Morehead State Women’s Basketball coaching staff.
Previously, Turgeon served as the head coach at Independence Community College, where he made an immediate impact. In his first season, Turgeon led the Pirates to a 20-7 overall record and their first NJCAA Region VI Championship since 1996, ending a 25-year drought.
In his second season at the helm, he led the Pirates to a 24-7 overall record, including 20 total wins over Region/Conference opponents, and a Jayhawk Conference Championship. Under his guidance, Maisa Marcal was named the 2021-22 Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year, and scored over 1,000 careers points.
Prior to his time at ICC, Turgeon served as the head coach at the University of Denver, Colorado State University-Pueblo, Iowa Western Community College, and Dodge City Community College.
Improving from 6-24 to 16-14 in his first season at Denver, the Pioneers had the best turnaround in the NCAA. They then improved to 18-14 in the following year and won their first WNIT game in program history, defeating New Mexico in the first round. In his final season, the Pioneers finished the year 15-15 overall, the program’s third straight season finishing .500 or better.
Throughout his time at Denver, the Pioneers ranked in the top of several DI categories, including scoring offense, three-point percentage, three-points made, blocked shots, assists per game, and free throws made, following the 2018-19 season.
Turgeon also spent time at CSU-Pueblo, where the team recorded back-to-back school record winning seasons (26-6 and 28-4). After leading the Thunderwolves to their first conference championship in almost 30 years, Turgeon was recognized as the 2017 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. He also coached several All-Conference Players at CSU-Pueblo, including Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year.
Turgeon is a Kansas native, born and raised in Topeka, and is a graduate of Washburn University.
