Wilkes University women’s basketball head coach Tara Macciocco has stepped down from her position after serving in the role for five seasons.
Macciocco will become the new Director of Facilities and Events for Riverfront Sports in Scranton, Pa.
“I am so thankful to Wilkes University and the entire Athletic department and administration for welcoming me in five years ago,” said Macciocco. “After 19 years as a head college basketball coach and 23 years overall in the business, I am retiring from college coaching to embark down a new career path. The past five years at Wilkes have certainly been a challenge but the staff, players and I have been able to establish a culture and made great strides especially in conference play,” she added.
In 2021-22 Macciocco coached Wilkes to its highest finish in the conference standings since the 1996-97 season as the Colonels earned the fifth seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament with a 7-9 record, making only its fifth trip to the conference postseason tournament in the 62-year history of the program and the first in 25 years. This past season she led the squad to another seven-win conference record, tying the pervious year’s mark.
During her second season, the Colonels continued to improve, earning a better overall record form the season prior as well as back-to-back road victories during conference play. In her first season at the helm, Macciocco led the Colonels to four MAC Freedom victories, the most since the 2014-15 season.
Macciocco coached three All-MAC Freedom selections over her five seasons at Wilkes.
“I am extremely proud of every player and coach that have been a part of this process and am so appreciative for everyone’s belief and buy-in in making big changes within the program,” Macciocco noted. “I truly believe we have left Wilkes Women’s Basketball better than we found it and am so thankful for the players, coaches, and staff that are responsible for that. I wish the team, and everyone at Wilkes the best of success and look forward to being a fan next year at contests,” said Macciocco.
Wilkes will begin a national search for the new women’s basketball head coach immediately.
