On Monday, July 25 Ithaca College women’s basketball head coach Dan Raymond has announced the hiring of Mary Mazzella as assistant coach.
Prior to joining the Bombers, Mazzella comes to IC after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach with SUNY Brockport where her responsibilities included point guard and guard development, recruiting, academic advisement for student-athletes, community service organization, and fundraising development.
“We are excited to welcome Mary to our ICWB family,” said head coach Dan Raymond. “Mary will bring her experience as a student-athlete along with her coaching and life experiences. Her connection to our program, as her sister, Meghan, was a four-year player, enable Mary to come with an understanding of the expectations associated with being a member of our coaching staff.”
Mary Mazzella is no stranger to the Division III women’s basketball landscape in New York as she had a decorated four-year playing career at SUNY Oswego. As a key member of the Laker’s program, she was a two-year captain and she was named the team’s most valuable player following the 2015-2016 campaign. She capped her career ranked seventh all-time in assists (246) and 10th all-time in steals (174). She was a four-time SUNYAC Commissioner’s List and All-Academic Team selection, a three-time Dean’s List Scholar and a two-time President’s List Scholar for her work in the classroom. She was also a member of Oswego’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee, providing a voice for student-athletes on campus and around the country. Mazzella was a two-sport athlete who qualified for the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the women’s high jump in 2015.
In 2017 she was selected to attend the NCAA Career in Sports forum at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, IN. She also participated in several NCAA Leadership Training workshops alongside coaches to learn about leadership and how to be an influential captain.
In the winter of 2019-2020 she spent one season as the junior high girl’s basketball coach at Moriah Central School where she implemented offensive and defensive fundamentals, while emphasizing team work and character.
Following her graduation from Oswego, she spent one full academic year at Southern Utah University where she was an athletic development intern and an assistant to the head coach of the women’s basketball program. During her time in Utah, she aided in the efforts to enhance players’ skills and knowledge of basketball. She also calculated player efficiency and shared analysis with players after competition. As a development intern she assisted the administrative staff in the development operations of the SUU athletic department with a focus on donor prospecting and cultivation, while also soliciting donations from businesses and alumni.
Mazzella graduated from Oswego in May of 2017 with a degree in Human Development and a double-minor in athletic coaching and sports studies. She is currently in pursuit of her master’s degree in Athletic Administration from SUNY Brockport.
