The Medgar Evers Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of Rodney Carr as the program’s head women’s basketball coach. Director of Athletics Chetara Murphy spoke glowingly when asked about Carr’s appointment.
“Rodney is a basketball lifer who has tremendous passion for the sport, and for seeing student-athletes reaching their full potential,” Murphy said. “He is a veteran of working in the CUNY Athletic Conference, and he brings a wealth of championship success and experience with him to our institution. We’re excited to have him aboard, and look forward to him continuing to cement his legacy here at Medgar Evers.”
Carr, who has 34 years of coaching experience at various levels, kept it very transparent when asked about what becoming the head coach at Medgar Evers meant to him.
“Having the opportunity to be the head coach for a basketball team at Medgar Evers is truly a dream for me,” Carr said. “I grew up in this neighborhood. And while I’ve enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in other boroughs (Manhattan and the Bronx), I haven’t had the opportunity to succeed collegiately in Brooklyn. I’m looking forward to putting my heart and soul into this, and building a team that Brooklyn can be proud of.”

WBB HEAD COACH – BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE (1995-2004)
- Posted over 190 victories during his tenure at the institution
- Led the Panthers to seven CUNYAC titles in an eight-year span (1997-1998 through 2002-2003, and 2004-2005)
- Coached the BMCC to the 2003-2004 CUNYAC finals
- Guided the Panthers to consecutive NJCAA Region XV championships in 1999-2000, and 2000-2001. BMCC also won the Region XV crown in 1996-1997 with a perfect 30-0 record.
- Led the Panthers to the NJCAA Region XV finals in 2004-2005 and 2001-2002
- Earned the 2002-2003 Region XV Team Sportsmanship Award
- Selected as the 2000-2001 District D Coach of the Year, the Region XV Coach of the Year, and the CUNYAC Coach of the Year
- Named the 2000 Basketball Coaches Association of New York Coach of the Year
- Selected as the 1999-2000 District D Coach of the Year, Region XV Team Sportsmanship Award Winner, Region XV Coach of the Year
- Named the 1998-1999 Region XV Coach of the Year
- Was selected the 1996-1997 District D Coach of the Year, and the Region XV Coach of the Year
- Paced BMCC to a perfect regular season perfect record of 28-0 in 1996-1997. The team was ranked No. 1 in the nation, marking the Panthers the first Region XV squad to ever finish the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation.
WBB HEAD COACH – HOSTOS COMMUNITY COLLEGE (2005-2007)
- Finished with an overall record of 48-10
- Led the Caimans to consecutive CUNYAC championships (2005-2006, and 2006-2007)
- Led the Caimans to back-to-back Region XV Finals in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007
- Earned the 2005-2006 Region XV Coach of the Year award
- Won his 200th overall game as a Head coach
WBB HEAD COACH – TECHNICAL CAREER INSTITUTE (2007-2009)
- Led TCI to two consecutive appearances the Region XV Tournament in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009.
- Paced TCI to a mark of 35-23 in his two-year tenure there
HEAD COACH – BOYS & GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL (2010-2021)
- Led the boys to the 2011-2012 AA State Federation Championship
- Led the boys to three consecutive PSAL titles (2009-2010, 2020-2011, and 2011-2012)
