The primary role of the individual in this position is to provide administrative and coaching assistance to the head coach. Responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the program within the scope of applicable NCAA, conference, and institutional regulations.

While the head coach is the ultimate decision making authority for the sport program, the assistant coach has authority to make decisions over the areas of the program as designated by the head coach (e.g. the assist coach may assess the talent level of prospective student-athletes to determine who should be in the recruiting pool for the sport). The assistant coach is often the first to know of a problem a student-athlete may be experiencing and may determine how/when to best approach the head coach. The assistant coach must exercise good judgement in making decisions. The assistant coach plays a vital role in team moral and dealing with student-athlete issues. Making bad decisions when evaluating talent and/or developing practice/game plans will result in negative on the field performance by the team. Failure to follow established recruiting policies and procedures will result in NCAA sanctions.

The incumbent represents IUPUI on the local, state and national scenes. The incumbent will provide input on potential rules changes that affect both the individual sport and athletics as a whole. The incumbent will also participate in the development of team rules that coincide with departmental standards. This position is complex in terms of many and varied job duties, therefore, the assistant coach must be able to multi-task and work at a high energy level.
