Howerton Named Interim Head Coach of St. Mary’s College Women’s Basketball

St. Mary’s College of Maryland Director of Athletics & Recreation Scott Devine announced on Tuesday (Mar. 17) the naming of Matt Howerton as Interim Head Coach of the women’s basketball team for the Seahawks.

“I am so pleased that Matt Howerton will remain in place as Interim Head Women’s Basketball Coach,” Devine said. “Coach Howerton did an incredible job working with our women’s basketball student athletes after he took over the reigns last season. He was able to provide an experience where our student athletes not only developed as players, but were able to work together the entire season in a positive environment, and they played hard and had fun as a group in every game.”

Howertown began the 2019-20 season as the Assistant Coach for the men’s basketball program and took over head coaching duties for the Seahawk women’s basketball program halfway through the season. Howerton has served as an Assistant Coach to the St. Mary’s College men’s basketball team since the 2017-18 season.

Before arriving at St. Mary’s College, Howertown spent two seasons at Marymount University as the Assistant Coach for the Saints men’s basketball program.

He joined the Marymount staff in 2015 after spending a year at the Impact Basketball Academy in Sarasota, Florida, where he was an assistant coach for both its post-graduate and varsity high school teams. Howerton was also a player development specialist, working with kids from all over the United States and different countries of the world. With his efforts, he helped numerous players earn scholarships to various levels of collegiate basketball.

Prior to Impact, Howerton was the head manager at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania for four years where he oversaw and coordinated the team’s managers and provided smooth operation of the team. He also assisted the whole men’s basketball staff under Head Coach Joe Lombardi. Howerton helped the program to a 99-23 record, four regular-season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships and two conference tournament championships in his four years as manager.

In August 2014, he worked with the Dominican National Team’s training camp. Additionally, Howerton has worked with various Division I camps at Kentucky, Virginia Commonwealth, St. Louis, Navy, George Mason, and Hoop Group. He also volunteered as a youth coach at Chantilly Youth Association for the SNAP Special Needs Assistant program.

A native of Chantilly, Virginia, Howerton graduated from IUP in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in sport administration and a minor in business.

“Looking ahead, I know Matt is heavily focused on recruiting and adding depth to our roster,” Devine explained. “In addition, he will be continuing his strong efforts with player development.  I know Coach Howerton will build on the positives from this past season and that he will continue to do a great job serving in the Head Coach role.”
