Pepperdine women’s basketball head coach Kristen Dowling has made the first addition to her staff, as she announced the hiring of Anthony Mason as an assistant coach on Wednesday.
“I am extremely excited to bring Anthony on board,” said Dowling. “I have known him for over 20 years, and he is a perfect fit for Pepperdine women’s basketball. He is a man of integrity and great character and cares deeply for his athletes. Anthony truly fits the mission statement of Pepperdine and will serve its community well. On the basketball side, he has an extremely high basketball IQ and is a great defensive mind. I truly think that he will be a catalyst for the success of the team.”
Prior to coming to Pepperdine, Mason served as assistant coach under Dowling at Claremont Mudd-Scripps on two separate occasions. He was a part of three SCIAC championship teams, as well as the first NCAA Championship appearance and first NCAA Tournament win.
“I would like to thank Steve Potts, Karina Harold and Coach Dowling for this opportunity,” said Mason. “I feel truly blessed and am extremely grateful. I am excited to be here at Pepperdine and to compete with purpose every day.”
In between stints at Claremont, Mason served as the head coach of the boys’ varsity team at Upland High School, as well as serving as a guidance counselor for the school. He led the team to the CIF semifinals in 2017-18 and over the course of his four seasons, had wins over two top-50 teams in the country.
Mason earned his bachelor’s degree at Long Beach State and his master’s degree at Azusa Pacific.
