Sydney Westry Named Assistant Coach at Martin Methodist

Martin Methodist Women’s Basketball head coach Billy Evans has officially announced the hire of Sydney Westry as the program’s newest Assistant Coach.

Westry comes to Martin Methodist after spending the last two seasons as a staff assistant at NCAA Division I Troy University in Troy, Alabama.

In two seasons with the Trojans, Westry helped guide the club to 40 total wins, highlighted by a 22-win season in 2018-19 that ranked as the best regular-season record in program history. The Trojans also hosted a first-round WNIT contest for the first time in program history.

“I am extremely humbled and thankful for Coach Evans and the opportunity he has given me to continue living out my dream,” Westry said. “There is a rich tradition of winning here, and I am thrilled to be a part of the continued growth of this program. I believe that Martin Methodist is a special place to be, and I look forward to being a part of the community.”

The connection between Westry and Evans runs deep as Westry spent four seasons as a player under Evans at the University of Mobile (Ala.).

During her time at Mobile, Westry played in 118 career contests as a guard for the Rams. In 2014 and 2017, Westry helped guide the Rams to two SSAC conference tournament championships and subsequent NAIA national tournament berths.

“Sydney was a terrific ballplayer at my last school and I knew then she had the makings to be a good young coach,” Evans said. “She has spent the last two years on a veteran coaching staff at Troy University and will be a terrific addition to our program here at Martin Methodist. I look forward to welcoming Sydney to campus and bringing her into the fold of our program very quickly.”

As assistant coach, Westry’s duties with the RedHawks will include: assisting with travel plans, setting up for games and practices, managing equipment, editing game and practice video, on-court coaching duties, social media responsibilities, organization of community service and coordinating individual work outs.

Westry holds a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Mobile (2017) and a master’s degree in Kinesiology from Troy University (2019).
