Wayne State University women’s basketball head coach Carrie Lohr announced the hiring of Jaresha Wayne State University women’s basketball head coach Carrie Lohr announced the hiring of Jaresha Obey as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She officially began her duties earlier this week.
“We are excited to welcome Jaresha back home to Michigan and to the Warrior family,” stated Lohr. Her vast collegiate experience stood out during the interview process. Our players will benefit from her playing and coaching experience, in addition to her military service. I believe she will help grow our program to even greater heights. Jaresha comes to WSU with tremendous experience and a work ethic that is second to none. Her professionalism will make for a smooth transition as she will be a great fit for our program.”
Obey joins the Warrior coaching staff with nine years of collegiate coaching experience, including the last four at Division II the University of the District of Columbia. She helped the Firebirds reach the East Coast Conference semifinals in her inaugural season at UDC with a 21-9 overall record and a 15-5 conference mark. Obey was instrumental in the development of five All-Conference players, including the 2017-18 ECC Rookie of the Year Daeja Quick. Quick finished fifth in the league averaging 16.0 points per game, while also leading the conference with 130 free throws made and ranked fourth in the ECC with 62 steals.
She spent the 2014-15 campaign at Division I Delaware State, aiding the Hornets in qualifying for the MEAC Tournament. Obey finished the academic year as the interim head coach.
Obey began her collegiate coaching career in 2010 at her alma mater, Rochester College. The Mount Clemens native served as an assistant varsity coach and junior varsity head coach her first two years with the Warriors, before serving as an Admissions recruiter her final two seasons, along with her coaching duties.
After earning her bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from RC in 2007, Obey was the middle school head coach for Bethesda Christian before working the next two years at the Palace of Auburn Hills, where she worked camps, clinics and the year-round hoops program for the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Shock. She earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration from WSU in 2014.
During her collegiate playing career, she was a three-year starter, a two-year team captain as well as twice leading her squad in scoring. Obey was selected the team’s MVP following her senior campaign of 2006-07.
A Commissioned Officer in the Air Force Air National Guard, Obey graduated from Mount Clemens High School in 2003 and attended the 2017 NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy. as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She officially began her duties earlier this week.
