VCU Women’s Basketball head coach Beth O’Boyle has agreed to a five-year contract extension that runs through 2024, Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin announced Monday.
O’Boyle, who was named the 2019 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, just completed her fifth season at the helm.
“Beth has done an excellent job in putting our women’s basketball program on a path for success. She has recruited elite-level student-athletes and developed them into a team that plays an exciting brand of basketball. I look forward to our program’s future under her leadership during the next few years,” McLaughlin said.
VCU had a historic 2018-19 season in which the Rams went 24-10 overall and 13-3 in Atlantic 10 play. VCU earned a share of the regular season conference title and the No. 1 overall seed in the conference tournament for the first time in program history. The Rams advanced to the program’s first conference championship game since 2008 and earned a berth to the WNIT, reaching the second round.
The Rams had an impressive year defensively as they finished third in the country in field goal percentage defense at 33.2 percent, fifth in the nation in scoring defense at 52.0 points per game and sixth in 3-point field goal percentage defense at 26.2 percent.
O’Boyle was also named both the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Virginia Sports Information Directors State Coach of the Year. She is 86-71 overall at VCU and 179-154 for her career as a head coach spanning 11 seasons. O’Boyle has led VCU to two postseason appearances, both berths in the WNIT.
O’Boyle and VCU return the top nine scorers from last season as well as all five starters in 2019-20.
