USF women’s basketball head coach Jose Fernandez today announced the addition of Danny Hughes as an assistant coach on the Bulls’ staff and the promotion of former graduate assistant Dominic DiRaimo to director of player development.
Hughes comes to USF after two seasons (2016-18) on the UMass women’s basketball coaching staff, serving the last as associate head coach.
“Danny is a great fit for our program and with our coaching staff. He brings a tremendous amount of experience recruiting and developing players,” Fernandez said. “Danny will be a terrific mentor for our student athletes and they will really enjoy working with him.”
Prior to his time in Amherst, Hughes spent seven seasons on the staff at SMU and had other Division I coaching stops at St. John’s (2008-09) and Houston (2005-08), including serving as interim head coach for the Cougars in the 2007-08 season. During his career, he also has had two coaching stops at Trinity Valley Community College and at Sam Houston State, and also served an eight-year stint as athletic director and men’s basketball coach at Cross Roads High School (Texas). A former standout player, Hughes played two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College, where he was named a National Junior College All-Star, before matriculating to TCU, where he was a two-year starter for the Horned Frogs and posted a 45 percent (108-240) career mark from three-point range that ranks as the third-best in program history.
DiRaimo served last season as a graduate assistant for a Bulls team that posted a 26-8 record and made its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. A 2015 graduate of USF, he previously served as a student manager and an assistant to the video coordinator for the Bulls. He had stops as an assistant coach at St. Catherine College and Saint Leo University after graduation.
“Dominic has done a great job for us both during his time as an undergraduate student and last year as a graduate assistant,” Fernandez said. “We are very happy to be able to promote him to the director of player development position and to be able to continue his terrific work with our program.”
