Wilkes University head women’s basketball coach Chris Heery has stepped down from his position as coach of the Lady Colonels after serving in the role for the past seven seasons.

Heery will be transitioning into the academic world after receiving his Doctorate in Education. He began his career over thirty years ago and has been coaching Division III women’s basketball for the past eighteen years.

“While I will miss coaching basketball, it has been a goal of mine to complete my doctorate and continue my career in the academic side of higher education,” explained Heery.

Wilkes’ best season under Heery came in 2012-13 when the Lady Colonels finished with eleven wins including the upset of then No. 21 ranked Scranton.

In his tenure Heery coached 1,000-point scorers Elena Stambone ’15 and Megan Kazmerski ’13 as well as the school’s all-time assist leader Amanda Pawlowski ’13.

Heery’s players also found success in the classroom as 38 student-athletes were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll during his time at the helm of the program.

Wilkes will begin a national search to find Heery’s replacement immediately.
