Bethune-Cookman University Women’s Head Basketball Coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis today [August 11, 2017] announced the appointment of Dante Travis as assistant coach,
Travis comes to B-CU from Columbus State (Ga.), where he helped guide the Cougars to the Division II Elite Eight in 2016-17. Prior to that he served as an assistant at Livingstone, the Director of Player Personnel for the Talladega Toros of the Central Basketball Development League, Kentucky State, Chestnut Hill College and his alma mater, Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va., spending five seasons as the associate head men’s basketball coach.
“It’s exciting to have a person of Dante’s caliber on our staff, ” Blair-Lewis said. “He has been successful everywhere he’s been. We’re thrilled to bring that level of expertise, confidence and even his playmanship to the program.”
Travis began his coaching career as the head boys basketball coach at The Ridge School of Montgomery County in Rockville, Md. compiling a 48-18 in records three seasons and earning Coach of the Year in 2003.
In his playing days, Travis played alongside NBA All-Star Allen Iverson at Bethel High School in Hampton, Va., serving as co-captain of the 1992-93 AAA VHSL state championship team. After high school, Travis played guard at Ferrum College, leading the team to a co-championship of the Dixie Conference before transferring to Saint Paul’s (1997-00).
Active member within the coaching community, Travis has worked the Allen Iverson Celebrity Game (1998), served as Commissioner at the Bryant Stith Basketball Camp (2004-05), and volunteered at the Tom Crean Basketball Camp (2011), Kemba Walker’s Summer Camp (2015) and Josh Howard Elite Skills Camp (2016).
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Paul’s College and a Masters in Recreation and Sports Administration from Western Kentucky University.
The two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season champions open their 2017-18 season at home November 10 against Edward Waters.
