University of Memphis Women’s Basketball Announces Staff Changes

Head women’s basketball coach Melissa McFerrin has announced the promotion of Alex Winchell to Director of Basketball Operations and the addition of Tyler Kopatich as the video coordinator.

Winchell has served as the programs video coordinator the previous two seasons and is a familiar face to the program as she played for McFerrin and the Tigers from 2008-2011. Kopatich is welcomed to Memphis from Wichita State where he spent the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team.

“I’m excited to not only promote Alex to director of operations, but welcome Tyler on to our staff,” said McFerrin. “Alex understands the ins and outs of our program as a player and staff member and is a tremendous asset for our team. Tyler’s experience as a video coordinator at Wichita State and his passion for the game will allow a seamless transition into our video area.”

While acting as the team’s video coordinator, Winchell was responsible for tape exchange and game film as well as preparing video for scouting reports.

Winchell was a four-year letterwinner at Memphis from 2008-2011, completing her stellar career with school records for three-point field goals made (214) and attempts (638). She also ranks fifth in the program’s history with 384 assists. A two-year team captain, Winchell played her last three seasons under McFerrin. She received the team’s 2011 Coaches’ and Les Phillips Memorial awards.

Following graduation, Winchell played a season of professional basketball with Karlovy Vary in the ZBL league before taking a graduate assistant coach position at Christian Brothers University. She coached under current Lady Bucs’ head coach Sarah Condra from 2012-15.

Winchell graduated with her degree in sport and leisure management from the University of Memphis in May of 2011 and earned her master of business administration (MBA) with an emphasis in finance from Christian Brothers University in December of 2014.
In his graduate assistant duties, Kopatich was the team’s video coordinator and graphic designer. He was responsible for recording, breaking down, and distributing game film to coaches as well as creating graphics for the Wichita State women’s basketball social media accounts.

Kopatich’s career in basketball began in 2012 while attending Ottawa University as a student assistant for the women’s basketball team. He became the student assistant after competing on the golf team for his first two years enrolled in school.

After graduation from Ottawa, Kopatich continued in basketball as an assistant coach at Olathe South High School for a season under the direction of coach Steve Ingram. He was responsible for strategizing and designing offensive and defensive principles for the team along with breaking down film and creating scouting reports.

Kopatich graduated with his degree in physical education from Ottawa University in December of 2014 and earned his masters in sports management from Wichita State University in 2017.
