Morehead State women’s basketball has hired former Hillsdale College (Mich.) head coach Todd Mitmesser as an assistant coach for the 2017-18 season.
“Our program is very fortunate to have Todd Mitmesser join our staff,” said Eagles head coach Greg Todd. “He has a great work ethic, and he’s a tireless recruiter and high-character person.”
Mitmesser joins Morehead State after two seasons at the helm of Division II’s Hillsdale Chargers. Mitmesser guided Hillsdale to the program’s second winning season in five years in 2016-17.
“I am very excited to join the Eagle family,” Mitmesser said. “Coach Todd and his staff have established a winning culture at Morehead State.”
Like Todd, Mitmesser began his head coaching career at the high school level – claiming a state championship at Nebraska’s Lincoln East High School in 2003-04. Mitmesser’s relationship with Todd goes back to Berea Community High School in Todd’s hometown of Berea, Ky.
“(Mitmesser) has a tremendous resume and has been a big part of winning programs for nearly three decades,” Todd said. “He won a state championship in high school, has been part of three very successful Division I programs, and possesses the experience of a head coach at the Division II level.”
From 2005 to 2008, Mitmesser was part of an Evansville staff that won a Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2007-08. Mitmesser began a three-year run with Toledo the next season, culminating with both a Mid-American Conference championship and a Women’s National Invitational Tournament crown in 2010-11. Mitmesser’s final stop before taking over Hillsdale came at Stony Brook, where was a Seawolves assistant coach from 2012 to 2015.
“I have had a great deal of respect for Coach Todd for many years,” said Mitmesser. “I feel fortunate to join his staff at Morehead State.”
Mitmesser replaces Todd’s long-time assistant Jim Brown, who helped direct the Eagles to a 21-10 (11-5 Ohio Valley Conference) record in 2016-17. Brown retired after three seasons at Morehead State, in addition to eight seasons under Todd at Transylvania (Ky.).
