Description: | The Head Basketball Coach will hold a full-time, 10-month appointment in the Department of Athletics, and will report directly to the Director of Athletics. The coach will manage the daily operations of an NCAA Division III intercollegiate basketball program competing in the University Athletic Association (“UAA”), with responsibilities including, but not limited to, the supervision of an assistant coaching staff and the planning, recruiting, coaching, developing, implementing, and administering of the basketball program to meet university and department objectives. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Coach the team, including developing in team members the skills necessary for successful competition in the sport of basketball; recruiting, hiring, developing, and overseeing a staff of assistant coaches; devising and implementing strategy for practice and competition; defining team and individual goals; and demonstrating positive sportsmanship and leadership. Coordinate the recruitment of prospective students to Washington University, requiring the identification of academically qualified prospective student athletes, ongoing communication with prospects, initiation of applications and matriculation of prospects. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree Previous experience coaching basketball at the high school level or higher and/or collegiate or professional basketball playing experience An understanding of, and commitment to, the NCAA Division III philosophy Ability to recruit, coach and teach highly talented student-athletes Effective communicative and public relation skills Strong organizational and administrative skills Competent knowledge of sport specific techniques, skill development and game/meet planning An understanding of how to build and manage a team The ability to understand and articulate program needs Demonstrated competency in helping to meet program objectives, working independently, supervising others, and helping to establish program priorities An ability to communicate with and interact positively with students, faculty, staff, alumnae, parents, prospective student-athletes and their parents, and the broader University community Knowledge in the operational use of computer and video technology The ability to develop a safe, functional, and inclusive working environment An appreciation of and a willingness to adhere to the NCAA Division III philosophy, rules, and regulations Successful passage of Annual NCAA rules test; current CPR, AED and First Aid certifications Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree. Three years’ experience coaching college basketball. Head coaching experience. |
