North Greenville University women’s basketball coach Jayne Arledge has announced that the 2017 season will be her last at the helm of the women’s basketball program, ending a 36-year head coaching career at North Greenville.
Arledge will retire at the end of the season but will resume her role as senior women’s administrator for North Greenville Athletics as well as an instructor in the university’s physical education program.
Jayne AR ledge began her coaching career at North Greenville University (Then North Greenville Junior College) in 1981, serving as the coach for the women’s basketball team as well as the North Greenville volleyball team. Her stint as volleyball coach ended in 1996, but not before notching five “Coach of the Year” nods, two Region X Tournament titles, two conference titles, and two trips to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament.
Her tenure as women’s basketball coach was even more decorated as she guided the Crusaders to three WCJC championships, three NCCAA Southeast Region championships, and four NCCAA tournament appearances including a second-place finish in 2005. During that time, Arledge coached several All-Conference players, seven All-Americans, four All-Tournament players, and six Academic All-Americans
Arledge was no stranger to success on the court as a player. The former Enka High School graduate, was awarded a basketball scholarship to attend Western Carolina University, the first athletic grant in aid awarded to a woman attending Western Carolina. Arledge went on to re-write the WCU record book, setting seven school records including points in a career with 1,928, points scored in a season with 544, and career scoring average with 19.5 points per game. The Catamounts inducted her into the WCU Hall of Fame in 1992 and retired her number 25 in 2006.
“Coach Arledge has contributed more to NGU and the athletic program for the last 36-years than anyone could imagine,” says athletic director Jan McDonald. “She has impacted 100’s of young women’s lives over the years. Her presence on the court will be missed but never forgotten. Her loyalty and service to NGU will forever be remembered.”
Coach Jayne Arledge will be honored on February 18th at North Greenville’s final home game.
