On Wednesday, Sept. 15, Centenary College of Louisiana and Director of Athletics and Recreation Bob Bunnell announced the hiring of David Foley as the eighth Head Women’s Basketball Coach in school history.
Foley joins the Centenary athletic family after serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator the past four seasons at NCAA Division III Luther College, helping the Norse compile a 67-40 record (.626 percentage).
“I am pleased to name David Foley as our new women’s basketball coach at Centenary College,” says Bunnell. “In Foley, we have a coach with both playing and coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level. His experience as a player at Hendrix College and as an assistant at Luther College makes him a great fit for our program. I have confidence he will be an asset to Centenary athletics, the College, and the Shreveport community as a whole.”
In the past two seasons, Foley helped guide the Norse to a 43-13 record (.768 percentage), two NCAA berths, two Iowa Conference Tournament Championships, and a Regular Season Iowa Conference Championship. In 2014-15, Luther finished 23-6, including 11-1 at home, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Norse followed that season with a 20-7 record and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2015-16.
“I am beyond excited to be named head women’s basketball coach at Centenary College,” said Foley. “I would like to thank Dr. Bunnell and the members of the search committee for their time and effort throughout this process. I felt at home during my visit to Shreveport, and after spending time with the young women in the program, I knew Centenary College was where I needed to be.”
This past spring, Foley was named to the inaugural Thirty Under 30 list by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). According to the WBCA, the list is to “recognize up and coming talent in our coaching family.” Foley was one of five honorees from more than 450 NCAA Division III institutions.
Prior to his stint with the Norse, Foley served as a Graduate Assistant Coach with Central Michigan. With the Chippewas, Foley worked directly with the first assistant and recruiting coordinator and helped with recruiting, on-court practice, game day operations, travel coordination, and academic support.
Foley attended Hendrix College from 2005-2009 and played both basketball and baseball. He was a starting forward for the first Warriors team to qualify for the SCAC Men’s Basketball Tournament, and earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors his senior season. He also started all four seasons at catcher for Hendrix baseball, helping the Warriors with the SCAC in 2009. He also captured SCAC All-Tournament honors as a catcher that season.
Foley, currently working towards his Master of Arts degree in sports administration from Central Michigan, received his Bachelor of Arts in business and economics from Hendrix in 2009.
“Centenary Women’s Basketball will be about enthusiasm and togetherness,” explained Foley. “We will embrace challenges and push ourselves to be the best we can be. I am excited to get to campus and begin building relationships with the student-athletes and the Centenary community. You should expect an exciting brand of basketball in the Gold Dome this season, and I look forward to getting to know the Shreveport community.”
