Renowned women’s basketball coach Elaine Elliott will join the Cal State Fullerton staff as Daron Park’s first assistant, it was announced by the fourth-year head coach on Wednesday.
Elliott’s duties with the Titans will include offense and defense implementation, skill development, practice and game plan preparation, film breakdown as well as also being the academic and compliance liaison.
“Elaine is so much more to me than an assistant coach,” Park said. “In fact, that title undersells who she is and what she means to me. Elaine has taught me so much throughout my career, and to have the opportunity to bring her on board to share her knowledge, wisdom and experiences with our women’s basketball team is a dream come true. I am thrilled she agreed to join my staff and can’t wait to get back on the court with her.”
Park was an assistant coach under Elliott at Utah from 2005-07, as the Utes produced a 72-29 overall record, a Mountain West championship, two NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the Elite Eight in his three years there.
Most recently, Elliott served as an assistant coach at Westminster College (NAIA) in Salt Lake City from 2012-15 as she helped the Griffins to two Sweet 16 appearances (2012, 2015) and two Elite Eight appearances (2013, 2014). In addition, Westminster won four consecutive Frontier Conference championships (2012-15) and totaled an overall record of 104-19 (.846) as well as a league record of 56-3 (.949) during her four-year tenure.
Elliott is well-known for her historic 27 seasons (1983-2010) as the head women’s basketball coach at Utah. She was a five-time Women’s Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year (1998, 2000, 2001, 2008, 2009), and in 2001 was named the John and Nellie Wooden National Coach of the Year.
She retired in 2010 with a 582-234 (.713) overall record which included 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, two trips to the Sweet 16 (2001, 2006), one trip to the Elite Eight (2006), 15 conference championships, 20 20-win seasons, four players drafted by the WNBA, 17 players with All-American honors while winning more games than any other coach in the Mountain West Conference.
She was a four-time MWC Coach of the Year (2000, 2001, 2003, 2008) and three-time Western Athletic Conference Divisional Coach of the Year (1997, 1998, 1999).
Elliott served as an assistant coach with the U.S Junior National Team in 1991 and served as the head coach at the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1990. She was an assistant coach at Utah from 1979-83 and coached at Boise High School from 1977-79 before making the move to collegiate athletics.
She was the High Country Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1986 and 1989 and the Idaho High School Coach of the Year in 1978 after winning the state championship.
Elliott was inducted into the University of Utah Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014 and was named the MS Utah Woman of the Year in 2010. She was inducted into the Utah Summer Games Hall of Fame in 1997 and was the first woman inducted into the Boise State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983.
In 1994 Elliott earned her master’s in sport management in Utah and her bachelor’s degree from Boise State in 1977.;
She was a four-year starter on the Boise State women’s basketball team from 1974-1977. While playing for the Bronco women, BSU finished third, first, and second in both her junior and senior seasons in the Northwest Region. She was selected to the NCWSA All-Star team each year that a vote was taken. Elliott was also an outstanding field hockey player.
Her hobbies include road biking, mountain biking, golf, running, hiking, training, house building projects and singing in the shower.
