Texas A&M University-Commerce Director of Athletics Tim McMurray announced that women’s basketball head coach Jason Burton has signed a three-year contract that keeps him at the helm of the Lions’ program through the 2018-19 season, with opportunities in the agreement to extend it through 2021.
“It is both a pleasure and a privilege to solidify Jason Burton as the leader of our women’s basketball program,” McMurray said. “Having watched Jason’s leadership style and the way he conducts his program on and off the court, it is refreshing to see the commitment to a best in class experience for our talented young ladies. We look forward to having him and (fiancé) Alex as part of the Lion family for the foreseeable future.”
Burton has coached the Lions to a pair of winning seasons after going 16-13 in 2015-16 and 14-14 in his first year. His 30 wins and his .526 winning percentage are both program highs for a coach during their first two seasons. Following the 2014-15 season, Burton and his Lions opened the Lone Star Conference Championship with an upset of No. 3 seed Cameron. In his encore performance in 2015-16, the Burton-led Lions collected the program’s first winning season since 2008-09.
“I want to thank Tim McMurray and Texas A&M University–Commerce for their support and continued belief in me and this program. I am extremely blessed to work with the incredible staff and young women that I work with and am able to coach on a daily basis. Commerce has been my home for more than six years now. I’m excited to continue to live in this community while leading this program and building on the success we’ve had.”
On the floor, Burton has seen his Lions thrive. During his tenure, six Lions have claimed LSC Player of the Week honors, five Lions have been awarded postseason all-conference honors, two Lions have earned all-defensive honors and in 2014-15 then freshman Princess Davis was named to the league’s all-freshman team as well as earning the LSC’s Freshman of the Year award. Davis went on to earn Freshman All-American status after receiving the national nod from the WDIIB.
Burton was the key cog in launching the 1525 Scholarship and the 1525 Scholarship Dinner in honor of former student-athletes Devin Oliver and Aubree Butts.
