Julian Assibey, a former women’s assistant basketball coach at the University of Colorado, has been named an assistant coach at Montana State University, announced Bobcat head coach Tricia Binford on Thursday afternoon.
Assibey, who will serve as MSU’s recruiting coordinator, spent last winter at CU where he helped coach post-player Jamee Swan to her second straight All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention honor after leading the Buffaloes in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.
On court, he assisted head coach Linda Lappe with defensive schemes, while also being responsible for game film breakdown and strategies, player development, recruiting, academics and the CU scout team.
“Going through the process of finding the right person for our program we knew Julian was the perfect fit as soon as the staff and team met him,” Binford said. “He brings enthusiasm and a background that will make him a terrific recruiting coordinator. Julian has recruiting experience at many levels, specifically the Pac-12 level the last two seasons.
“We feel that Julian’s ties and knowledge of the northwest extending out to the Midwest will push our recruiting efforts to the next level,” Binford continued. “Julian will also oversee our point guard development as he has the ability to connect with student-athletes, while challenging them to reach their full potential.”
During the 2014-15 campaign, Assibey served as CU’s video coordinator, before being promoted to assistant coach. From 2011-14, he served as an assistant coach at Merrimack College in Andover, Mass., where he coordinated recruiting, camps, academics, equipment and the team budget.
Assibey has also spent time as an assistant coach at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., and at his alma mater William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
“I feel truly blessed to join Coach Binford and the Bobcat family,” Assibey said. “I am very excited to be a part of such a successful program and look forward to helping take it to the next level.”
A native of Downey, Calif., Assibey was a four-year letterwinner at William Penn and is among the school’s top five in career steals.
A double-major, he received his Bachelor of Science degrees in sports administration and strength and conditioning in 2005 and followed that with a Master’s of Arts degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia (CA) University in 2013.
Assibey and his wife Kaylee are the parents of two boys, Malachi and Elijah.
He will begin his duties at Montana State on June. 1.
