Holy Cross head women’s basketball coach Bill Gibbons and director of athletics Nathan Pine have announced the hiring of Kara Powell as an assistant coach. Her primary responsibilities will include player development of the guards, as well as scouting and recruiting.
“Kara has a terrific basketball pedigree and tremendous knowledge of and passion for our game,” said Gibbons. “She was an outstanding player for a former Crusader (Bronwyn Monahan ’93) at Agawam (Mass.) High School and for the New England Crusaders AAU program, before her great career at Richmond. We are thrilled to welcome her back to Massachusetts as a Holy Cross Crusader! Coach Powell’s experience at Sacred Heart and at William & Mary has prepared her well – she will be a huge asset to our program.”
Powell comes to Holy Cross from the College of William & Mary, where she was the director of basketball operations for the past two seasons. While with the Tribe, Powell was in charge of team travel, and assisted with opponent film exchange and breakdown, and recruiting.
Prior to William & Mary, Powell was the assistant women’s basketball coach at Sacred Heart for the 2012-2013 season. She also worked with the New York Knicks as a basketball operations intern in the summer of 2010.
A 2011 graduate of Richmond with a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communications studies, Powell was a four-year member of the of the women’s basketball team. She appeared in 123 career games with the Spiders and compiled 695 points, 307 assists and 294 rebounds.
