Lynn University head women’s basketball coach Julia Huddleston has made her first personnel decision in preparation for the upcoming season, announcing the hiring of Stephan Walton as the assistant women’s basketball coach. Walton joins the Fighting Knights following a successful four-year campaign as the point guard and captain of the University of Manitoba men’s basketball team in Winnipeg, Canada.
“After my own 13 year stint serving as an assistant coach, I knew that I need a loyal assistant by my side with a true passion for the game, an everlasting work ethic, and a positive attitude,” said Huddleston. “Stephan has exhibited these exact qualities for a very long time and I have the utmost respect for his wealth of basketball knowledge. Our Lynn University student-athletes will gain an excellent mentor when he joins the Fighting Knights family. I have no doubt in my mind that Stephan is the person for the job and can’t wait to go on this journey to the top with him.”
The Manitoba Bisons are members of Canada’s national governing body of university sport, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Along with being a four-year team captain, Walton was a selection on the Canadian West Second Team in 2013, earned team MVP honors in 2012 and 2013 and was the Jack Lewis Scholarship Award Winner in 2011 and 2012.
In his final season with Manitoba, Walton averaged 10.6 points and a team-high 4.1 assists per outing in 20 starts.
During his tenure with the Bisons, Walton served as the men’s basketball Video Coordinator for all four years. He also obtained a High Performance Athlete coaching certification from the Coaching Association of Canada.
Walton has been an active youth basketball coach in both the United States and in Canada. He has assumed the head coaching role for the 15-under Georgia Metros of the EYBL in Atlanta, Ga., since 2012 and was a camp counselor at Georgia Tech University. North of the border, Walton has been involved with the Manitoba Bisons’ junior basketball program, supervising league games and teaching fundamentals as a camp instructor since 2011.
After a standout three-sport career at Southwest DeKalb High School, the Decatur, Ga., native remained in his home state to attend Valdosta State University. Walton served as a point guard on the hardwood for two seasons on the Blazer’s NCAA Division II basketball squad, starting in 20 games and leading the team in assists his second season. He was named to the Gulf South All-Tournament Team as a sophomore.
Walton recently received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Manitoba and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State University in 2011.
