Chanté Crutchfield and Jauwan Scaife joined the Southeast Missouri women’s basketball program as assistant coaches Monday.
“It was very important for me to hire a staff that I can trust and that their core values align with mine,” said Southeast head coach Rekha Patterson. “I am excited about these coaches joining Redhawk nation, as we work extremely hard to bring pride back to our program.”
Crutchfield will assist with recruiting, camps, scouting and player development, and serve as Southeast’s academic liaison and community service coordinator among other duties.
“I have known Chanté since we were graduate assistants at Baylor University and I have watched her build very successful programs in the state of Texas,” commented Patterson. “Her passion for developing young women, championship experience and mentality, and knowledge will be beneficial to our program.”
Crutchfield was head coach at Crowley High School in 2014-15, leading her team to an overall record of 23-8 and 11-3 in district play. She guided her team to its first District Championship in seven seasons and first playoff win in 10 years.
“I am truly blessed and honored to be part of a new era in Southeast women’s basketball,” said Crutchfield. “Coach Patterson is a phenomenal and genuine person who cares about her players. We share the same desire and belief in developing the entire student-athlete. I look forward to embarking on an exciting time working with Coach Patterson.”
A native of Waco, Texas, Crutchfield has seven years of head girls basketball coaching experience at the high school level. She also worked at other Texas prep schools, including Brenham, William B. Travis and University.
At Brenham, Crutchfield compiled an overall record of 55-15. She guided the program to its first District Championship in nine years and Back-to-Back District titles for the first time in 12 seasons. Those teams produced two District Most Valuable Players, one Offensive MVP, two Defensive MVPs, one Newcomer of the Year, one Most Improved Player, 14 All-District selections, nine Academic All-District honorees, four All-Brazos Valley, three All-State and three All-Region picks, and one District 18-4A Coach of the Year accolade.
She started her head coaching career at William B. Travis High School, helping the Rebels to an overall 62-54 record, three consecutive playoff appearances and their first 20-win season in 15 years.
Crutchfield was a graduate assistant coach for Kim Mulkey at Baylor from 2000-02 and worked as a basketball operations coordinator for the Houston Comets of the WNBA from 2002-05.
She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration-finance from Texas-Arlington in 2000 and earned her master’s in sports management at Baylor in 2002.
Meanwhile, Scaife will serve as the team’s facilities, social media and video/technology coordinator in addition to assisting with recruiting, camps, scouting, player development and other tasks as assigned.
“I had the opportunity to watch Jauwan over the last two years during our time at Ball State,” said Patterson. “I know and appreciate how dedicated and committed he is to helping young people achieve success through hard work and a positive attitude.”
Scaife spent the last two years as a graduate assistant/video coordinator with the Ball State men’s basketball team.
“I am blessed beyond belief that Coach Patterson gave me the opportunity to be a part of her staff at Southeast Missouri State,” said Scaife. “I am excited to get started and look forward to the future of Redhawk basketball.”
Scaife played four years as a guard at Ball State from 2009-13. He was named Second-Team All-Mid-American Conference in 2012-13 and earned MAC All-Freshman Team honors in 2009-10. Scaife finished his career ranked 14th in program history with 1,326 points, becoming the 26th 1,000-point scorer for the Cardinals. He broke BSU’s career records in three-pointers made (203) and attempted (579), as well.
A native of Muncie, Indiana, Scaife was a three-year letterman at Muncie Central High School. He averaged 17.3 points, four rebounds and three assists per game in his senior season. Scaife secured First-Team All-Conference and All-City honors, and Second-Team All-State accolades during his standout prep career.
Scaife graduated in three years at Ball State with a degree in sport administration. He remained at BSU to get his master’s in physical education/coaching.
