Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass announced the hiring of Seymour, Ind., native Teri Moren as head coach of the IU women’s basketball program. He called this afternoon to offer her the position and she accepted immediately.
Moren still holds records at Seymour High School, was an Indiana All Star, a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter at Purdue under women’s basketball hall of famer Lin Dunn and is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. After holding assistant coaching positions at Butler and Northwestern, Moren served as head coach at the University of Indianapolis and as the associate head coach at Georgia Tech. She spent the last five seasons as head coach at Indiana State University where she led the Sycamores to their first 20-win season in eight years in 2013-14.
"We are thrilled that Teri Moren will be leading Indiana women’s basketball," Glass said. "Not unlike our recent head baseball coaching search, we were very pleased with the extremely high caliber of coaches who expressed interest in this position. Teri emerged early in the process as a lead candidate and I am confident with her at the helm, the future of Indiana women’s basketball is very bright."
An avid IU fan growing up in Seymour, Moren was selected as head coach after a comprehensive national search led by Glass who worked in consultation with the Search Advisory Committee, consisting of key administrators, support staff and junior guard Nicole Bell, who served as the student-athlete representative to the committee. Glass and the committee reviewed dozens of potential candidates, performed extensive research and reference checks on a handful or so, and had three sitting head coaches, including Teri, on campus to interview with Glass and the committee.
"This is an unbelievable day for me and my family," Moren said. "It is a dream come true. I’m an Indiana kid who dreamed of having an opportunity like this and today it is happening for me. I’m very grateful and blessed to become a part of the IU family."
In her four years at Indiana State, Moren guided the Sycamores from a middle of the pack Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) team in her first year, to a conference championship program in 2013-14, including a postseason tournament appearance in the WNIT. Last year, point guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir earned MVC Newcomer of the Year recognition as senior Anna Munn was named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Twice in her four years, Moren led the Sycamores to a WNIT berth while six players have earned All-MVC honors during her time at ISU.
ISU finished with a 20-12 record in 2013-14, the program’s first 20-win season in eight years and just the fifth 20-win campaign in school history. With a 14-4 record in conference games, Moren’s Sycamores won a share of the regular season MVC title and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the MVC Tournament. Moren led Indiana State to six-straight victories and seven wins in eight games to end the regular season last year to secure a share of the MVC crown. It was only the third time in program history that ISU won a regular season conference championship and first since 2006.
In 2012-13, Moren’s Sycamores finished with an 18-13 record, the program’s most wins in six years at the time. ISU went 10-8 in conference play, its most MVC victories in four seasons, to finish fourth in the MVC standings. The Sycamores would go on to play in the WNIT for the first time since 2006. Moren’s 2012-13 team set a program record for fewest points allowed per game (55.5 ppg) while holding 10 opponents to less than 50 points.
In her second year at ISU in 2011-12, Moren led the Sycamores to a fifth place finish in the MVC. During her first year at the helm in 2010-11, Moren won the most games by a first year coach in ISU history as the Sycamores played into the semifinals of the 2011 MVC Tournament.
Prior to ISU, Moren was associate head coach at Georgia Tech. In each of her three years there, the Yellow Jackets made an NCAA Tournament appearance and won 22 or more games each season.
Moren began her head coaching career just up the road at the University of Indianapolis. She spent seven seasons at UIndy beginning in 2000-01. The 2003 WBCA Region 4 Coach of the Year in NCAA Division II, her teams went to three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournaments and earned Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2002-03. That squad finished with a 29-3 record overall and an 18-2 mark in conference play.
Moren began her coaching career in 1992-93 at Butler as an assistant coach for six years, leading the Bulldogs to three 20-win seasons. Moren then spent two years as an assistant at Northwestern.
A 1992 graduate of Purdue University, Moren earned her bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation. She was part of three NCAA Tournament teams and Purdue’s first Big Ten championship.
Moren graduated from Seymour High School in 1987. She led the Owls to four sectional titles, two regional championships, a semi-state win and a 1987 state finals appearance. She was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on April 26, 2014.
