HOT: Gibbons inks extension at Holy Cross

Holy Cross director of athletics Nathan Pine has announced that the College has agreed to a four-year contract extension with head women’s basketball coach Bill Gibbons through June of 2019, the terms of which were not disclosed.

"We are pleased to announce that Bill Gibbons will continue to lead our women’s basketball program for many years to come," said Pine. "It is a great day for Holy Cross and for Bill and his family. He is the winningest coach in our program’s storied history and I am excited for the future development of our players and the program under his leadership."

Gibbons will be entering into his 30th year as head coach of the Crusaders in 2014-2015. During his coaching career, Gibbons’ teams have won 11 Patriot League regular season championships, 12 Patriot League Tournament championships and made 13 postseason appearances (11 NCAAs, one WNIT and one WBI). In 1991, his team defeated Maryland 81-74 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which remains the only NCAA Tournament victory by a Patriot League school. During Gibbons’ first 29 years, his Crusader teams have won 20 or more games 17 times.

"I am excited to continue to represent Holy Cross and lead this program and its terrific student-athletes to Patriot League titles and NCAA appearances," said Gibbons. "I am confident that we will continue to add to the rich tradition of Holy Cross women’s basketball as we have for 29 years."

As the sixth coach in the program’s history, Gibbons has enjoyed the longest tenure in the position. He is the winningest coach in the history of the program, leading the Crusaders to an overall mark of 553-327 in his 29 years. On Dec. 3, 2011, Gibbons earned his 500th victory as Holy Cross’ head coach, becoming the 24th active Division I coach to reach 500 wins. He crossed the 550-win plateau on Feb. 19, 2014.

During Gibbons’ tenure at Holy Cross, the Crusader program has produced four Academic All-Americans and numerous Academic All-District picks. In addition every student-athlete who has played for four seasons under Gibbons’ direction has earned her degree.
