Petersen And North Texas Mutually Agree To Part Ways

North Texas and Mike Petersen have mutually agreed to end Petersen’s tenure as Mean Green women’s basketball coach, North Texas Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal announced Tuesday.

"Coach Petersen is one of the best people and coaches I’ve ever been around, and I’m as surprised as anyone that we are at this point," said Villarreal. "Everywhere that he has been he has been successful, unfortunately that hasn’t been the case here. I appreciate all of the time, commitment and hard work that both he and Patty have shown to us and this community. They will always be a part of our family."

The Mean Green finished with a 5-24 record this season and failed to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama. In his three seasons with North Texas, Petersen’s teams compiled an overall record of 28-61, including a 20-34 conference record between the Conference USA and Sun Belt.

"I’m very grateful to Rick and Dr. Rawlins for the opportunity to come to North Texas," said Petersen. "I’m disappointed for the players and the university that everyone worked so hard but we were unable to make the progress we wanted to make. I’ll always be a fan and supporter of North Texas."

A search for his replacement will begin immediately.
