Southeast Missouri State University Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt announced Monday that Ty Margenthaler has resigned as head coach of the Redhawks women’s basketball team, effective March 31. Assistant coach Heather Ezell will serve as the acting head coach until a replacement is named.
"Coach Margenthaler and I met and decided that it was in the best interests of the program that he step aside," Alnutt said. "While he came to our program at a difficult time with back-to-back 21-loss seasons, the program has not rebounded as much as we had both hoped. We appreciate Ty’s efforts and we wish him and his family well in the future."
Margenthaler was the seventh head coach in Southeast women’s basketball history. He compiled an overall record of 37-78 and 18-46 in the Ohio Valley Conference in four years at Southeast. The Redhawks did not make the OVC Tournament in each of Margenthaler’s four seasons at the helm.
"While I had hoped to achieve more during my tenure here at Southeast, I feel it is in the best interest of everyone involved to resign as head coach of the Southeast Missouri State University women’s basketball program," Margenthaler said. "I would like to personally thank the University community, fans and student body for their support and thank the student-athletes for their efforts over the last four years."
Southeast finished its 2014-15 campaign at 10-19 and tied for 10th in the OVC with a 3-13 mark.
Alnutt indicated that Southeast will immediately start a national search for the eighth head coach in program history.
