Shenandoah University Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Brian Wigley announced Tuesday that Michelle Guyant-Holloway has resigned her position as head women’s basketball coach.
Guyant-Holloway, who was hired at SU in the summer of 2006, had a 78-78 overall record in six seasons at the helm of the women’s hoops program.
The Hornets best year under Guyant-Holloway was her first – Shenandoah was 17-9 overall and 9-5 in the USA South that season. Included in the 16 overall victories were championships at the Lebanon Valley and Shenandoah Shootout in-season tournaments.
This past season, the Hornets finished 9-17 overall and 6-12 in their final USA South Conference campaign. On Sunday, Shenandoah officially joins the Old Dominion Athletic Conference as full-time members.
"This is something that my husband, Phil, and I have been discussing for some time," Guyant-Holloway said. "We have enjoyed our time here in the northern Shenandoah Valley, but it is time for us to return home and be closer to family."
Guyant-Holloway is a Wisconsin native and played collegiately at Northern Michigan University. Her previous coaching experience was at her alma mater.
"I want to thank Michelle for all that she has done for the women’s basketball program during the past six years," Dr. Wigley said.
"The program took a step forward under her tutelage and we certainly expect that our next coach will continue this development."
Wigley, who is running the department until Doug Zipp officially takes the reins of the department on July 16, will work with Zipp to identify potential candidates for the women’s basketball position.
"Doug is going to be heavily involved in this process," Wigley said. "We will form a committee, as we always do when a coach departs, and the committee will include Doug in its process of reviewing candidates.
"We would like to have this person prepared to begin their full-time duties by the time classes start at the end of August."
