Coastal Carolina Hires Assistant

Coastal Carolina University head women’s basketball coach Jaida Williams has named Tom Goehle the program’s newest assistant coach. Goehle, who was most recently an assistant coach on Carolyn DeHoff’s staff at North Dakota State University, brings nearly 20 years of coaching experience to Coastal and has worked at numerous levels of intercollegiate basketball.

"We are so excited to welcome Tom to our Coastal Carolina women’s basketball family," said Williams. "He is an amazing teacher of the game, a phenomenal recruiter and an all around great person. He will primarily work with our post players and assist in scouting. His depth of experience will be a wonderful addition to our staff."

Goehle was an assistant coach at North Dakota State during the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons. His role included player development, scouting and recruiting in addition to his game day on-floor duties. During his time at NDSU, Goehle recruited and coached several players to All-Summit League honors and helped the Bison to a league-best 13.1 turnovers per game in 2013-2014.

Before arriving at NDSU, Goehle spent four seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Sioux Falls under head coach Travis Traphagen. During his tenure with the Cougars, the program saw a pair of 18-14 seasons and two consecutive seasons with over 20 wins. In 2011, USF set a single-season record with 27 wins, taking the program to its first NAIA Elite Eight appearance since 2003. In 2012, Sioux Falls completed its first full season as a NCAA Division II member. Goehle assisted the Cougars to an overall record of 86-37.

Prior to his move to the collegiate ranks, Goehle taught and coached in the Hills Beaver Creek School District where he spent time as the head girls’ basketball coach. Goehle also spent time directing the district’s boys and girls track and cross country programs.

In addition, Goehle, a licensed minister, has served as the Director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Sports Ambassadors International Sports Ministry. He began his work with the organization in 1996.

Goehle comes from a rich basketball heritage, as his father, Hugo Goehle, surpassed 560 wins as a high school boys’ coach. Goehle began his coaching career at Augustana College where he served as student assistant under Gary Thomas for two years following a playing career at Minnesota State Mankato and Worthington Junior College.

Goehle received his bachelor’s degree from Augustana (S.D.) College in 1993.
