Sydney Colson, the starting point guard of Texas A&M’s 2011 National Championship team, was named women’s basketball video coordinator on Wednesday. Colson had served as a graduate assistant with squad since January 2014.
Colson has been a part of A&M’s three most successful NCAA Tournament runs, helping the Aggies to the 2008 Elite Eight and 2011 National Championship as a player, and was on the bench as a graduate assistant for A&M’s run to the Elite Eight in 2014.
“Coaching becomes fun when you have a chance to bring back young people who helped you win championships and get them started in coaching,” said Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. “Sydney Colson was the heart and soul of our team for four years, and one of the most popular players ever at Texas A&M. This is a young lady who can do so many things in life.”
“I am extremely excited to be back at Texas A&M with Coach Blair, who has given me so many opportunities to be successful,” said Colson. “This is yet another great opportunity to add to the list. The coaching staff is tremendous and the team is hungry for success this year. Luckily, I’m along for the ride.”
Colson returned to A&M as a graduate assistant in January 2014, helping the squad to 15 wins in the 20 games after her arrival, and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight. She fills the full-time position vacated by Nick Grant, who accepted an assistant coaching job at San Diego State.
A standout point guard herself, Colson’s presence boosted the play of then-sophomore point guard Jordan Jones, who averaged 8.4 assists after Colson’s arrival. Jones went on to set the A&M single-season assist record and was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
As a player, Colson had her best season during her senior year, the 2010-11 National Championship season. She led the conference and ranked in the top 10 nationally with 6.1 assists per game. She finished the season with 221 assists, which ranks third on A&M’s single-season assists chart. She still ranks fourth all-time in A&M’s career assists (504) and steals (255). She was an honorable mention All-America and all-conference selection her senior year.
Colson, a Houston, Texas native, finished her four-year career with 853 points, 504 assists and 255 steals over 138 games. She posted over 100 assists in each of her final three seasons, which were her three seasons as the Aggies’ starting point guard. While playing at A&M, her teams went an astounding 115-29.
Since graduating, Colson played for the New York Liberty in the WNBA, and played professionally in Poland.
