Jasmine Young is the newest member of the Georgia State women’s basketball coaching staff, head coach Sharon Baldwin announced Wednesday. Baldwin coached Young for four seasons at East Carolina from 2005-09.
Young comes to Georgia State after serving as an assistant coach at Virginia Union since the 2014-15 season. Under head coach AnnMarie Gilbert, Young helped guide VUU to a No. 2 ranking in 2016-17 as the Lady Panthers wen 28-5 and advanced all the way to the NCAA D-II National Championship game.
“I’m forever grateful to AnnMarie Gilbert,” Young said. “She has helped prepare me for this next step in coaching. I’m hungry, energetic and passionate about the game and I feel right at home at Georgia State.”
Young and the Lady Panthers finished the 2015-16 season at 28-3 and earned a No. 4 ranking to end the year after making it to the Elite 8. That season, the team won its first conference title in 34 seasons and first regional title in 32.
Prior to Gilbert’s hire for before the 2015-16 season, Young was named the interim head coach of the Lady Panthers.
“I have known Jasmine for over 12 years and am so excited that she will be joining our program. She is a winner that played and coaches with so much love and enthusiasm for the game,” Baldwin said. “She will be a great mentor and role model for our players and I look forward to being reunited with her.”
Before Virginia Union, Young saw success as an assistant coach at Powhatan High School in Richmond, Va. She led the team to three winning seasons as she was in charge of guard skills and guard development. During her campaign at Powhatan she would coach two District Players of the Year and one Regional Player of the Year.
Young played professionally for three seasons overseas. She finished out her final professional season in 2011 with Aguas Buenas Tigersas in Puerto Rico. Prior to headed to Puerto Rico, Young played briefly with Herne T.C Club in Herne, Germany. She also played for Klub Sportowy Basket 25 (Artego Bydogszcz) in 2010, competing in one of the top leagues in Poland against WNBA standouts such as Tamika Catchings, Nicky Anosike, and Shannon Bobbitt. In 2009, Young made her debut with Aguas Buenas Tigersas where she helped lead Aguas Buenas to the playoffs and led the league in assists.
“I’m super excited and humbled to have the opportunity to come and work under Sharon Baldwin who I was able to play for at East Carolina. I believe I have a strong understanding for her style of play and the type of players she would like to move the program forward,” Young said. “The staff has been very warm and welcoming and I’m eager to work with everyone.”
Young was a standout point guard for Baldwin at East Carolina from 2005- 2009. She finished her Pirate career ranked fourth on the East Carolina career scoring chart and 18th all-time in Conference USA with 1,591 points. She is currently third in C-USA history in career assists (665) and sits in the top two on the Pirate career ledger in 3-point field goals made (first, 177), steals (second, 264) and assists (second). Young was named to the All-C-USA Second Team for four-straight seasons and garnered three-consecutive C-USA All-Defensive Team accolades. She was first player in ECU history to earn C-USA Freshman of the Year honors, picking up the designation in 2005-06. Additionally, Young played in a school-record 123 career games while starting all but one of them.
Young played high school ball at Monacan High School in Richmond. She was a decorated player, earning multiple all-state and all-region recognitions.
