Wilson to serve as acting head WBB coach at Slippery Rock in 2022-23

Slippery Rock University has announced that assistant women’s basketball coach Chenara Wilson will assume the role of acting head coach for the 2022-23 season following the unexpected passing of head coach Bobby McGraw earlier this month.

A national search will take place following the season to fill the permanent head coaching role.

Wilson has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach on the Slippery Rock staff and is entering her sixth year at The Rock in 2022-23. Prior to joining the staff at SRU, she served as head coach at Mercyhurst North East for three seasons from 2012-15, where she led the junior college program to a winning record in all three years.

Wilson earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Cleveland State and went on to earn a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Cleveland State as well. She played two years of basketball at Lakeland Community College, where she earned All-Region honors, before transferring to Cleveland State. As a Viking, Wilson appeared in 58 games over two seasons and averaged 5.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per game for the Division I program.

Outside of basketball, Wilson has spent time working in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and as an associate teacher and counselor with the Positive Education Program in Cleveland.

Slippery Rock is scheduled to open the 2022-23 season in early November. Wilson will become the 16th person to lead the SRU women’s basketball program in an official capacity.
