Wielgus Promoted To UMass Assistant Coach

The University of Massachusetts women’s basketball program and head coach Sharon Dawley announced the promotion of Chris Wielgus to the role of assistant coach on Wednesday. Wielgus previously served as the director of operations for the team in 2013-14 and has 30 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level.

"I love to teach and I can’t wait to work with our remarkable student-athletes," Wielgus said of the opportunity to return to the coaching ranks. "This is a great time to be a part of UMass women’s basketball. There is a lot of fun to be had and I am grateful to Coach Dawley for this opportunity."

Prior to her arrival in Amherst, Massachusetts, ahead of the 2013-14 season, Wielgus served as the women’s basketball head coach at Dartmouth College from 1993-94 through 2012-13. She also led the Big Green from 1976-77 until 1983-84 and served as the head coach of the Fordham Rams during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.

"Coach Wielgus is simply one of the best in the business," Dawley said. "She is a professional who knows the game, knows how to teach and loves working with the student-athletes."

Dawley and Wielgus previously coached together on the Dartmouth staff for 10 seasons when Dawley served as an assistant coach for the Big Green from 1993-97 before her promotion to associate head coach ahead of the 1998-99 season. Dawley filled the role of associate head coach until she was hired as the head coach at Vermont prior to the 2003-04 campaign.
