Whitney Corley Named Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Southwestern College

Whitney Corley, who has led the Southwestern College women’s basketball team as the Interim Head Coach since June, has been named the Lady Builders’ permanent Head Women’s Basketball Coach. President Brad Andrews announced Corley’s hiring Thursday afternoon.

“Whitney is a Builder,” Andrews said. “She personifies the character, hard work, dedication and spirit that defines Southwestern College and our students. She has led a first-class women’s basketball programs from day one, and I am proud that she will lead this program forward. I am excited for the future!”

Corley, who played for the Lady Builders from 2003-05, and is No. 3 on Southwestern’s all-time single season scoring list with 539 points scored during the 2004-05 season, the same season in which she was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. After her playing career ended, she spent one year as a student assistant coach at Southwestern and then was a graduate assistant coach at Fort Hays State University.  She became the assistant women’s basketball coach at Garden City Community College in 2008 and spent the next six seasons in that position before returning to Southwestern.

“Whitney has demonstrated that she is the right person for this job,” Interim Assistant Athletic Director Scott Nuss said. “She’s got a great basketball mind, has coaching experience on a number of different levels, and has the Lady Builder basketball program on the right track. I’m happy she has agreed to be our coach as we move forward!”

Corley’s Lady Builders are 8-15 this season with seven games remaining on the regular season schedule, five of which will be played inside Stewart Field House. Southwestern has won five of its last contests after surviving a non-conference slate which featured five nationally-ranked opponents, and currently sits sixth in the KCAC.

“I’d like to thank Southwestern College and its administration for giving me this opportunity,” Corley said. “I’ve inherited a great group of women, and am excited to see what the future holds for our program!”

Corley and the Lady Builders will travel to North Newton on Saturday to face the Threshers of Bethel College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside Thresher Gymnasium.
