Western Michigan head women’s basketball coach Shane Clipfell has announced the hiring of Stephanie Smiley as Director of Operations. Smiley was a four-year standout (1999-02) and All-American point guard at Eastern Michigan while Clipfell was an assistant coach for the Eagles.

Smiley returns to the college game after entering the teaching field and spending the last three years as a high school girl’s coach in Kodiak, Alaska. Her responsibilities at Western Michigan will include film exchange, travel coordination and assisting with community involvement. She replaces Brenna Banktson, who accepted an assistant coaching position at Youngstown State.

Smiley was a three-time All-Mid-American Conference selection at Eastern Michigan and a Kodak All-American Honorable Mention as a senior in 2002. She was twice named First Team All-MAC and was MAC Freshman of the Year in 1999. The Eagles had a winning record each of her four seasons.

Smiley still holds Eastern Michigan’s record for career assists with 577 and is second all-time in rebounding with 784. She remains in the top five in career three-pointers (174), three-point attempts (435), three-point percentage (.400) and blocked shots (103), as well as in the top 10 in career scoring (1,401), field goals made (491) and games played (114). She was the first player in the MAC, male or female, to record 1,400 points, 700 rebounds and 500 assists in a career.
