West Virginia St. names head coach

Following a nationwide search, West Virginia State University Athletic Director Sean Loyd announced the University has hired David Smith as the new Yellow Jacket’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach.

Smith brings 30 years of experience and comes to Institute after spending the last 14 years at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., where his team’s posted a record of 249-156. Previously, he was head coach at Shippensburg University and at St. Joseph’s College.

Smith has compiled a career mark of 575-271, ranking him seventh all-time among NCAA Division II coaches in number of wins.

In 1996 he led Shippensburg to a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament. Altogether, Smith has taken squads to the NCAA tournament 14 times, including six trips while at Bellarmine, the most recent coming in 2008.
