Albright women’s basketball head coach Janice Luck announced Tuesday the hiring of Chelsea Welch as the next assistant coach on the staff.
Welch comes to Reading from Canton, N.Y. where she was an Assistant Coach for the St. Lawrence University’s women’s basketball team for two seasons.
At St. Lawrence, Welch was part of the Liberty League’s Coaching Staff of the Year in the 2019-2020 season. Welch helped coach the team into a winning season, taking them from an 8-17 overall record in 2018-19 to 18-9 overall and third place in the Liberty League in the 2019-2020 season. The team had also won their first playoff game in the Liberty League in four years. Welch coached first-team and second-team All-Conference players as well as the player ranked first in field goal percentage for the Liberty League. She also led preseason and postseason conditioning and individual workouts, created strength and conditioning weight programs, recruited prospective athletes nationwide, coordinated community service projects, and assisted in team travel operations.
Welch started her collegiate career at the University of Pittsburgh, transferring after two seasons to become a well-decorated Division I student-athlete for the Wright State University women’s basketball team from 2015-2018. She started every game in her final two seasons of NCAA eligibility and was the leading scorer in the Horizon League for both seasons. Welch was a two time first-team All-Conference player and earned Horizon League Player of the Year in the 2017-18 season. She was selected a captain in her final two seasons, and led the team to the conference championship in 2018. Welch was beyond a student-athlete at Wright State as she also worked as a Facility Assistant, Women’s Basketball Camp Coach, Athletic Marketing and Communications Intern, and member of SAAC.
Welch went on to compete at the highest professional level overseas in Portugal where she was named the Import Player of the Year as she led the conference in scoring. She held the record for the most points scored in a single game during the 2018-19 season. Welch also trained youth skill development during her time in Portugal.
