The City College of New York Interim Director of Athletics Steve Macias announced today that Varrell Eddie has been named the head coach of the CCNY women’s basketball program.
“I am extremely excited to have Varrell Eddie join the City College of New York Athletics Family.” said Macias “He brings a decade of coaching and recruiting experience to the CCNY Women’s Basketball program. I am looking forward to seeing the team build, grow and succeed in the future under his leadership”.
Eddie joins the Beavers after most recently serving as the Head Coach at Purchase College for the past six seasons.
“I would like to thank Vice President, Celia Lloyd, Interim Athletic Director, Steve Macias, and the committee for choosing me to lead the women’s basketball program at City College. I’m super grateful, humbled, and excited for this opportunity. I’m ready to get to work with our student-athletes and put in the work to bring this program back to a place of prominence. It feels good to be back coaching in New York City, there’s no better place in the world”.
At Purchase, Eddie accumulated a 34-91 overall record leading the Panthers (2016-22. The program increased win totals across his first three seasons, notching an 11-14 mark in 2017-18 and a 15-12 record in 2018-19; the program’s second-best finish since 2014.
In 2019, Eddie led the Panthers to their first postseason appearance in five years, advancing to the semifinals of the Skyline Conference Tournament. The program also boosted two Skyline All-Conference selections during Eddie’s tenure.
Before his head coaching stint at Purchase, Eddie spent two seasons as Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx, NY (2014-16). At Samuel Gompers, he rebuilt the program by developing a positive team identity and culture, coordinating fundraising events, and planning enrichment activities for student-athletes.
Eddie previously spent two seasons at Purchase as the lead assistant coach (2012-14), helping lead the program to two of the most successful seasons in the program’s history. The team boosted a 17-11 record in 2012-13, advancing to the Skyline Tournament Championship game, and earned a berth into the ECAC Metro Postseason Tournament. In 2013-14, the Panthers finished the season 16-10 overall, advancing to the Skyline semifinals.
Eddie also holds a wealth of experience within New York City’s public and charter school system, serving in several leadership positions at various schools. He currently works as the East Side House Program Director of the Learn-To-Work Program at Mott Haven Community High School. He held roles at New Visions High School for the Humanities II as the Dean of Students (2013-17) and Associate Director of School Culture (2018-19).
Eddie earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications from SUNY Cortland in 2009 and graduated with his master’s degree in Sports Business Management from Manhattanville College in 2012.
