Virginia Tech head women’s basketball coach Dennis Wolff announces the hiring of Jermaine Woods to the staff as an assistant coach.
“We all welcome Jermaine to our staff,” said Wolff. “He has a variety of basketball experiences and has been a successful coach for the Maury’s girl’s team for the past three years. Adding him to our staff gives us someone who is very familiar to the Hampton Roads area, which is vital to our future recruiting and is an excellent court coach who can help the girls improve.”
Woods comes to Tech after three seasons as a head coach at Maury High School in Norfolk, Va. where he led the team to a 61-18 record and berths to the regional final in back-to-back seasons. Woods also coached the Boo Williams AAU 17U and the Under B Team where 21 students-athletes earned scholarships in his three years as head coach. Additionally, Woods owns and operates Gettin’ Better Basketball which provides one-on-one training for basketball athletes. The organization is focused on building a training program around the individual that allows them to build the needed skills and fundamentals.
Prior to his coaching days, Woods was a standout athlete at Christopher Newport University where he was a two time first team All-Dixie Conference selection and earned the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Woods set Christopher Newport’s three-pointer record as a junior and broke the record again as a senior in 2003. Woods followed up his time at Christopher Newport by competing professionally in Poland. The Virginia native graduated from Norfolk State with a degree in business management in 2011.
“I am very excited to join Coach Wolff and the Virginia Tech women’s basketball coaching staff” said Woods. “I am grateful for the opportunity and am ready to do what it takes to help the program continue to move in a positive direction. Coach Wolff has done a tremendous job his first two seasons in re-establishing the women’s basketball tradition at Virginia Tech. My family and I look forward to joining the university’s athletic department during these special times.”
