Utah Valley University head women’s basketball coach Cathy Nixon has announced the addition of Vicki Bohney and Adam Wardenburg to her staff for the upcoming 2014-15 season. Bohney transitions to UVU following three seasons as the head girls basketball coach at Taylorsville High School in Salt Lake City while Wardenburg arrives from the College of Southern Idaho where he served as an assistant last season.

The duo round out Nixon’s staff for the new year, joining associate head coach Jason Glover — who is entering his second season — and four-year assistant Liz Darger.

"I think the main things that both Vicki and Adam bring are character, integrity, and a work ethic that is going to help our program reach another level," said Nixon. "We’ve been blessed with very good assistants in the past and that is what you build your program with. We’re very grateful to have both of them."

Bohney has held head coaching positions at three Utah high schools since 2005 when she took over as the head varsity girl’s basketball coach at Mount Vernon High School in Murray. After two years there, she moved to Highland High School in Salt Lake, where she remained for four seasons. While at HHS, Bohney earned Region 6 Coach of the Year honors after leading the Rams to a 16-7 overall record in 2008-09.

In 2011, Bohney began a three-year stint at Taylorsville High School. In 2011-12, the Warriors went 17-5 overall and a perfect 10-0 in region play to claim the Region 2 title and to give Bohney her second Coach of the Year award. Last season, THS went 11-11 overall with a 7-3 region mark to finish third in Region 2.

Aside from her coaching endeavors, Bohney has also served as the President of the Utah Women’s Basketball Coaches Association since 2009. In that capacity, she led coaches’ clinics, organized Senior All-Star games, and managed finances and a statewide coaches database for the UWBCA.

"I’ve gotten to know Vicki over the last four or five years and she is very good at a lot of things," Nixon said. "She has a very strong organizational ability and she can manage chaos well. That’s something we need in our program — her strength on the administrative side as well as her knowledge as a former head coach."

A native of Wilmot, South Dakota, Bohney received her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Moorhead State University in 2005, where she also played two seasons with the Dragons. She also completed her master’s degree in Education from Adams State in 2002.

"Being at the college level has been one of my aspirations for a long time," said Bohney. "I know it’s not an easy field to get into, especially coming from the high school ranks. But for Cathy [Nixon] to give me this opportunity has been awesome. I’m very excited to be here. UVU is growing and it’s an exciting place to be and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help this program progress and succeed."

Meanwhile, Wardenburg’s arrival at Utah Valley marks another step in his ascension up the collegiate coaching ranks. Wardenburg spent last season on staff at the College of Southern Idaho where he helped the Golden Eagles to a 29-4 record, a Region 18 Tournament title, and a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament.

While at CSI, Wardenburg led skill development with post players while also fulfilling other duties such as creating practice plans and game plans. He also worked extensively with recent UVU signee Patrice Toston, an NJCAA first team All-American after averaging 16.5 ppg for the Golden Eagles.

Prior to his arrival in Twin Falls, he spent one season as the Director of Basketball Operations at his alma mater, Utah State University. Wardenburg received his bachelor’s degree in Human Movement Science at USU in 2013 and also served as the student manager with Aggie women’s basketball during the 2011-12 season.

"Adam has grown up in a basketball family and he is just a quality person," explained Nixon. "He has been around Division I basketball on both the men’s and women’s side and he has a unique perspective coming to us from the junior college level. He’s knowledgeable about scouting and player development, but mainly I think what he brings is a passion for basketball and a knowledge of what it takes to be a part of a successful program."

An Orem native and son of former BYU assistant and current Indian Hills CC head coach John, Wardenburg and his wife Tristan are the proud parents of two-year old daughter Blakely.

"I’m really excited to be here. I love the campus and the atmosphere here," Wardenburg said. "I’m excited about the opportunity to try and help this program achieve a conference championship and make its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. I think this is a team that can win right away and I’m very excited about the pieces we have in place with our returners and with the incoming recruits."

Utah Valley begins its second full season in the WAC in 2014-15.
