Utah State head women’s basketball coach Jerry Finkbeiner announced Friday that JC Carter will be joining the Aggie coaching staff as an assistant coach. Carter rounds out the Aggie staff along with assistant coaches Ben Finkbeiner, Micha Thompson and Director of Operations Ebony Haliburton.
Carter will be replacing former assistant coach Crystal Robinson, who left to pursue other opportunities. Carter comes to Utah State after one season as a men’s assistant coach at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark.
"JC comes to us with strong references on the court and off the court. I am really happy with this staff and how it has come together. We will miss some of the chemistry elements that we had with our previous staff. Having Ben (Finkbeiner) and JC here is great. They are about the same age group, mid-30s, and both are on their way up in the coaching profession. They are both extremely hard working and motivated. I think our staff is very high energy and will be visible on the recruiting trail. I am excited about the potential chemistry that this staff has. I couldn’t be happier with the end product of JC complimenting what Ben is bringing and what Micha (Thompson) already has here," Finkbeiner said.
He previously spent two seasons at the helm of Marshfield High School (Mo.). In 2011, Carter took over the Blue Jay program at Marshfield, leading the boys’ team to back-to-back conference championships. In his first season, Carter was named the Central Ozark Conference Coach of the Year as his team made an appearance in the MHSHAA 4A Top-10.

Carter spent four seasons in multiple capacities at his alma mater, Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. He was named the assistant men’s basketball coach in 2007 and quickly helped lead the program to a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Championship in 2008. After one season with the men’s program, Carter assumed his first collegiate head coaching position, taking over the SBU women’s team for three seasons. His Lady Bearcat teams were known for their three-point prowess, as SBU ranked second in the nation in triples made.
Carter also spent time on the west coast, moving to Los Angeles for the 2003-04 season to take charge of the Village Christian High School boys’ team. After only two seasons, he was offered an assistant coaching position at Cal State Northridge, coordinating recruiting efforts, team travel and opponent scouting reports.
He started his coaching career when he went to assume the director of basketball operations at Texas-Pan American for the 2002-03 campaign, spending a single season in Edinburg.
Featuring three stops over four seasons, Carter’s playing career began at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, where he spent one season in NJCAA competition prior to transferring to NCAA I Stephen F. Austin for his sophomore campaign. Finally, in 2000, Carter settled in for his last two years at NCAA II Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., where he earned the Greg Germany 2002 Senior Leadership Award for his efforts.
Utah State ended the season with a 15-16 record, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Tournament. Senior guard Jennifer Schlott led the conference in scoring, averaging 26.2 points per game en route to being named the Mountain West Player of the Year.
